Artist Statement 

As a Korean, I have always taken note of the continuous diligence and sincerity I learned from childhood. Koreans may appear a bit delicate and quiet on the outside, but their explosive energy and passion are unique characteristics that are well-known even abroad. I explore where these unique Korean traits originate and how they manifest in modern times, expressing them through action-based painting.

Rather than creating works through special techniques, I fill the canvas using the acrylic collage method, molding the paint itself through extremely ordinary and simple labor. Through this, I aim to express the power generated by a mundane and diligent daily life as the energy of colors. Unlike the simple labor that goes into my process, the canvas reveals a dynamic energy of constantly changing colors.

The background to my use of acrylic paint as the main material for collage lies in my experience as an inexperienced and lacking novice mother. During a time when my barely speaking young daughter and my husband were almost my only human connections, I was inspired by my daughter's simple sticker play to experiment with peeling and sticking paint like stickers. During the severe period of COVID-19, when it was difficult to seek even a little help, it seems that thanks to those sincere but lacking times, I was rewarded with a harmonious family and the acrylic collage technique. Just as the current spring is more beautiful and valuable, with the brilliant colors and sweet scents of blooming flowers, because of the long and tedious past winter, my art shines brighter.

My artwork is both a result and a momentary record within a chronological process, similar to a work diary. The serial number at the end of the artwork's title is a means of recording the date the work was completed in reverse order. By sharing this small but very meaningful part of my daily life with the audience, I hope to remind them that the strength and energy for endeavor come not on special days but from today's small gestures.

나는 한국인으로서 어린 시절부터 배워온 지속적인 근면과 성실함에 주목하고 있다. 겉으로는 조금 유약해 보이기도 하고 조용해 보이기도 한 한국인이 가진 폭발적인 에너지와 열정은 이미 해외에서도 많이 알려져 있는 한국인 고유의 특징이다. 나는 이러한 독특한 한국인의 캐릭터가 어디에서 시작되었으며 현대에는 어떻게 발현되고 있는지를 탐구하며 이를 행위에 기반한 회화작업으로 표현하고 있다.

나는 특별한 기술을 통해 그려낸 작품이 아닌, 지극히 평범하고 단순한 노동의 행위로 물감 자체를 성형하여 아크릴 콜라주 기법으로 화폭을 채운다. 이를 통해 지루할 정도로 평범하고 성실하게 지나가는 일상이 낳는 힘을 색의 에너지로 표현하고자 한다. 단순 노동으로 이루어진 작업 방식과는 달리, 화폭은 끊임없이 변화하는 듯한 색의 역동적 에너지가 펼쳐져 있다.

지금의 아크릴 물감을 콜라주의 주재료로 사용하게 된 배경에는 나의 경험 없고 부족한 초자 엄마로서의 삶이 있다. 말도 잘 못하는 어린 딸과 직장을 다니는 남편이 거의 유일한 인간관계였던 시절, 돌이 갓 지난 딸아이의 단순한 스티커 놀이에서 영감을 받아 물감을 스티커처럼 떼었다 붙였다 해보면 어떨까 하는 생각이 들었다. 작은 도움의 손길도 구하기 쉽지 않았던 코로나가 극심했던 기간, 부족한 엄마였지만 성실했던 그 시절 덕에 보상처럼 나에게 단란한 가정과 함께 아크릴 콜라주 기법이 주어지게 된 듯하다. 길고 지루했던 지난 겨울이 있었기에, 우리에게 찾아온 지금의 봄이 더욱 아름답고 값지며, 흐드러진 꽃의 화려한 색과 달콤한 향기가 더욱 빛나는 것처럼 말이다.

나의 작품은 성과물이기도 하지만, 동시에 작업 일지와 같은 시계열적인 과정 속 한순간의 기록과도 같다. 작품 명 말미의 일련번호는 이를 기록하는 수단으로, 작품이 완성된 일자를 역순으로 기록한 것이다. 이 일련번호는 작지만 아주 의미 있는 나의 일상을 관객과 공유하며, 관객에게 시도를 위한 힘과 에너지는 특별한 날에 찾아오는 것이 아닌, 바로 오늘의 작은 몸짓에서 오는 것임을 상기시키고 싶다.
